Navy Veterans Benefits

By Cindy Hoffman

Navy veterans are eligible for many benefits, ranging from job assistance and career planning to health care, home loans, life insurance and burial assistance. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for many of these programs. Navy veterans must receive a general or honorable discharge to qualify for benefits.

U.S. Navy veterans with service-related disabilities may qualify for a monthly benefit ranging from $123 to more than $3,100 The amount is based on the veteran's level of disability and the number of dependents. Veterans who were injured during active duty or whose disease was made worse while on active duty may qualify for this tax-free benefit.

Most U.S. Navy veterans are eligible for VA home loans, which are guaranteed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. One big plus of a VA home loan is that in most cases no down payment is required. Navy veterans must obtain a certificate of eligibility before obtaining a VA-backed loan. Veterans may then apply for a VA loan with any mortgage lender that participates in the home loan program.
