Compensation Benefits for Widows of Retired Veterans

By Racquel Ricci

Widows of retired U.S. military veterans are eligible for benefits, including monetary compensation, base privileges and health care benefits. Widows who re-marry may lose some or all of the compensation they receive, depending on their age when remarrying.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is a monthly monetary payment to eligible survivors of deceased U.S. military veterans. If the veteran's widow chooses to remarry prior to the age of 57, DIC benefits may be forfeited. DIC pays a set monthly amount and eligible applicants may also qualify for additional monetary allowances.

Widows of retired U.S. military veterans are eligible for compensation to aid with expenses resulting from the death and burial of the veteran. Some of the compensation offered includes assistance with burial expenses, free military headstones and markers, burial flags, funeral honors and more.

Tricare insurance is available to survivors of deceased retired U.S. military veterans. Tricare is the insurance program offered through the U.S. government to the U.S. military, active duty, reserve, or retired, their dependents and veteran survivors. Widows of retired veterans are able to remain on the Tricare health insurance plan that they were utilizing even after their spouse is deceased.

The Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) is an opt-in insurance plan that provides a monthly payment to the spouse of the deceased for the remainder of the spouse's life. SBP requires a monthly payment, and has different payment amounts depending on what level of coverage you choose. This plan provides monetary compensation for widows of retired U.S. military veterans.
