Do I Pay Back a VA Compensation If I Go Active Duty

By Micah McDunnigan

Men and women who served in uniform for the United States military are entitled to a number of benefits. If a veteran temporarily loses eligibility, he does not have to pay back money he received when eligible.

One of the more popular VA benefits for veterans is the GI Bill. This program gives money to eligible veterans for tuition and living expenses for higher educational programs.

When an individual goes on active duty, he is not eligible to receive VA compensation or benefits for the duration that he is on active duty. His eligibility is restored when he is no longer on active duty.

If an individual goes on active duty after receiving VA compensation, he does not have to repay money he received while not on active duty. The only time he would have to repay VA compensation is if the VA mistakenly paid him while he was on active duty, and ineligible for the payment.
