How Can I Get My VA Disability Approval Letter

By Tom Streissguth

Veterans who are disabled may need official verification of their condition. When granted disability compensation, they are provided with a disability approval letter, which spells out their condition and the amount of their benefits. This letter can also be required for application for Social Security disability benefits, private long-term disability benefits, for survivors' benefits or when applying for medical insurance or health care. Some states, counties, and towns also provide tax exemptions for disabled veterans.

Contact your local Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) office. If you are not sure of the location or phone number, call the VA's toll-free information number, (800) 827-1000. The local VA office will give you basic information on the disability claim process and the status of a claim you have already filed or that has been decided. Disability benefits are available for those veterans who have a service-related disability and who have not been dishonorably discharged.

If you have not applied for veteran's disability benefits, file an Application for Compensation (Form 21-526) with the Veterans Administration. This form can be filled out and filed online. The VA will respond with a letter, stating what it needs so it can decide your claim. This may include medical records from your doctor, a hospital or clinic.

Your claim will be decided by a Rating Veterans Service rpresentative. He may order a medical examination paid for by the VA. You must appear at this examination, or your claim will be delayed or denied.

The Rating Veterans Service rRepresentative will then make a decision and send a letter listing all the evidence and facts she relied on to make the decision. If the benefits are granted, the letter will give the monthly amount and the effective date of your disability. You may appeal a denial.

Your local VA will provide a Disability Verification Letter on request. The letter will verify the military service and medical disability of all veterans who have qualified for disability benefits. In some states, the VA will automatically generate and mail out the letter to qualifying veterans.
