How to Apply for Social Security And Disabled Veterans Benefits

By Terry Smith

If you're a disabled veteran, you have two possible sources of benefits: the Veterans Administration, or VA, and Social Security. To qualify for VA benefits, your disability must be the result of injuries due to military service, while Social Security benefits are available to all Americans. Both organizations have precise rules about what type of disabilities qualify for benefits. Most VA claims are filed when the veteran leaves active duty through resignation, discharge or retirement, but either type of claim can be filed at any time.

File an application for disability benefits with the Social Security Administration, or SSA, by going to their website. You'll be able to submit both the Application for Social Security Disability Benefits and the Adult Disability and Work History Report there.

Obtain an application for benefits from the VA by either sending them a letter declaring your intent to file for benefits or by calling customer service at (800) 827-1000. Unlike the SSA, the VA does not allow people to file disability claims online.

Return the filled-out application form to the VA. When you file your initial claim, send a copy of your service medical record with it if the VA doesn't already have a copy.

Send a request to an organization such as the Disabled American Veterans to represent you.
