How to Apply for Veterans Disability

If you want to apply for veteran's disability there are a number of steps and procedures you must follow in order to expedite the process. A veteran can apply for veteran's disability compensation if the disability is due to injuries sustained while in the military. Veterans can also apply for veteran's disability if the disability was incurred from events other than military service if you are totally and permanently disabled or you are 65 years of age or older. Your service in the military had to have taken place during a war time and your income is limited.

Go to the website vabenefits.vba.va.gov and click on the box that says, "Instructions for filling out applications."

Click on the link that says "VA form 21-526." This is the application to fill out to apply for veteran's disability.

Read the instructions for filling out the application completely on this page. The first column lists the information you must have, and the second column lists the documents you need to support your answers. Scroll down the page to read all of the information.

Click on the button to the far left which says, "Start VONAPP." Read all the information on that page. Click "continue" at the bottom to the far right, reading the subsequent pages, until you reach the VONAPP login page. Enter your login name and password. If you are a new user, click on the "sign up now" button and register.

Assign yourself a login name and password with each having at least eight digits. Click "continue."

Click the drop-down box on the page titled, "Create a new form" and select application compensation form 21-526 and then click "continue."

Read the Privacy Act information and then click "continue." Start to fill out the application. Click "continue" once you have completed the questions on each page until you have answered all questions. Press "continue" until you have completed the Interview and Final steps sections.
