How to Get a Seven Hundred Dollar a Year Disabled Veterans Clothing Allowance

There is a way for some disabled US military veterans to get a seven hundred dollar a year clothing allowance. Federal Regulations say that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) must pay disabled veterans, an annual clothing allowance if they have a service-connected disability or condition, or a disability paid under 38 U.S.C. 1151 that requires them to wear or use a prosthetic or orthopedic device that wears out or tears clothing, e.g., pants, shirts, etc.

Veterans may also be paid the clothing allowance for a service-connected skin condition medication prescribed by a physician, which causes damage to your outer garments that cannot be repaired. Irreparable damage does not include stains that you can remove through regular laundering or dry cleaning. To get approval of a claim based on use of medication requires a medical determination. All skin conditions requiring use of a medication are not considered permanent conditions and a re-determination is required each year. When these conditions are met, some disabled veterans could qualify to receive the seven hundred dollar a year clothing allowance

To get a seven hundred dollar a year disabled veterans clothing allowance, gather any paperwork you have related to your paid service-connected disability. You also need to include any paperwork or evidence related to the use of your VA prescribed prosthetic or medication for your skin condition.

Report to a local VA Service Center such as a hospital or clinic. Tell a representative that you wear a prosthetic device or you have a condition due to a service-connected disability and you want to apply for the seven hundred dollar a year clothing allowance.

Be prepared to be re-evaluated to establish potential eligibility if it cannot be established through your records. This could include a medical examination of your condition.

When a rating decision is reached that qualifies you to apply for a seven hundred dollar a year disabled veterans clothing allowance, you will be informed of your potential eligibility for the clothing allowance by the Veterans Service Center. Then you should be told to apply for the clothing allowance benefit at a VA health care facility by filling out VA Form 10-8678, Application for Annual Clothing Allowance, and submitting it to the nearest VA health care facility.
