How to Join the Veterans of Foreign Wars

By Ann Johnson

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is the largest organization of combat veterans in the United States. Veterans eligible for membership include those who have received a campaign medal for oversea service, those who served in Korea for 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days and those who have received imminent danger or hostile fire pay. Members must be citizens of the United States who are currently serving in the military or who have received an honorable discharge. If you meet these requirements and wish to join, follow these few easy steps.

Go to the eligibility webpage of the VFW website to answer a series of questions to verify your eligibility for membership.

Click on "Get Started" on the eligibility page and answer the series of questions. If you are eligible, proceed with the following steps.

Go to the "Post Locator" webpage of the VFW website to locate a VFW post in your area.

Contact the post in your area to sign up, or sign-up online and become a member-at-large. Membership fees vary, yet are an average of $35 a year. Using the online membership form will require a credit card. When signing up online, you will receive notification by email of your approval status or that you will need to supply more information. Once approved, you will receive your membership card in 8 to 10 business days.
