How to Request a Supplemental Claim From Veterans Affairs

By Kayla Lowe

You would file a supplemental claim with the Veterans Affairs administration (VA) if you previously filed a claim for benefits and need to file another one for increased benefits, reconsideration of a previous claim or compensation for new disabilities. It's not necessary to re-file the original application and submit information the VA already has on file.

Download VA Form 21-526b, the Veteran's Supplemental Claim for Compensation. Either fill in the form on your computer (it features fillable boxes) and then print it, or print it and then complete it with black ink.

Fill out Part I, the Veteran's Identifying Information section. This section simply requests basic information like your name, Social Security number, address and telephone number.

Fill out Part II, the Information About Claim section. Indicate what you are applying for along with an explanation supporting your claim.

Print the form when you are done and sign it. Mail it to your closest VA office.

Go to your local VA office if you need assistance filing your supplemental claim and a representative can assist you.

It may be six months or longer before you receive any correspondence from the VA regarding your claim.
