How to Transfer VA Benefits

By Kayla Lowe

If you are a veteran who receives Veteran's Affairs benefits, then keeping your contact information up to date is essential for you make sure that you keep receiving your benefits on time each month. If you move to another city or state, then you need to ensure that you transfer your VA benefits to your new location, whether you receive them via check or direct deposit. You must also transfer your medical records if you plan on enrolling in another VA clinic closer to your new address.

Transfer where your VA benefits check is mailed by changing your address. Change your address by sending a signed letter requesting your change of address to the VA regional office that has your records, or calling 800-827-1000 and request your change of address that way.

Transfer your VA medical enrollment and records by contacting the VA facility where you currently receive treatment and ask the agency to mail your records to the VA facility closest to your new address, or calling 877-222-8387 and put in your request to a customer service representative.

Transfer your VA benefits direct deposit destination by calling 877-838-2778. Provide your new financial institution's nine-digit routing number, account number and type of account (checking or savings).

If you call a VA phone number to transfer your VA benefits, you will be asked a series of questions to verify your identity like your full name, social security number, branch of service, dates of service and date of discharge.

Only the recipient of VA benefits or the VA recipient's legal representative can transfer his VA benefits. A spouse or other relative are not considered a legal representative unless she has power of attorney.
