How to Update Your VA Disability Compensation

By Talia Kennedy

If you receive disability compensation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, you might need to update your information on file if your circumstances change. You have to report a new spouse or dependent to the federal government if you get married or have a child. If the injury for which you are being compensated becomes worse or if you acquire a new injury or illness that is a result of being on active military duty, you can ask to have your compensation application re-evaluated.

Access the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' online application website, vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp, which is called VONAPP. If you applied online when you first filed for disability compensation, you used this site. Click the "Start VONAPP" button.

Select the correct form to request an increase in your compensation. This form is called VA Form 21-4138, "Statement in Support of Claim."

Fill out and submit the form. Check the form to be sure that you have provided all required information. You might need to provide documentation of any changes that you report. For example, you might need to provide a copy of your marriage license if you've gotten married or a copy of a baby's birth certificate or certificate of adoption. Submit written reports from your doctor to verify changes in your medical status.

You can submit VA Form 21-4138 using a paper form if you'd rather not complete it online. Call 1-800-827-1000 to find the Veterans Affairs office that is closest to you. A department representative there can help you fill out and submit the form.
