How to Write an Original Statement of Service for a VA Loan

By Marlon Trotsky

Qualified U.S. veterans and active military service members who are looking to refinance their homes can take advantage of a VA (Veterans Affairs) loan. If you qualify for the loan, the normal down payment requirement will be waived. However, the loan can only be used on your primary residence, and not on any investment properties. To prevent fraud, you are required to present a statement of service, which helps a lender verify your military experience.

Meet the eligibility requirements to qualify for the loan. You must be an active duty military serviceman, a qualifying veteran, reservist, national Guardsman or a widow of a veteran or a serviceman who died in service or from a service-related injury. Fill out a VA Form 26-1880, Request for Certificate of Eligibility.

Draft an original statement of service to establish your identity as a military serviceman or veteran. The statement includes such information as your rank, branch, date of entry into your current active duty period, Social Security number and any time lost (see Resources). If you're an active member of a selected reserve unit or national guardsman, you must also include proof that you have served at least six years.

Have the statement signed by your personnel officer or unit commander. Finally, contact a VA home loan specialist about completing your loan application.
