How to Donate Time to Disabled Veterans

By Noreen Wainwright

Disabled veterans have made great sacrifices serving their country. They have served in wars that shaped our country's history like World War II to the present day conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many have paid a heavy price and now need help coping with the activities of daily life. The range of help needed by veterans is broad. So if you want to give back to those who gave to our country, donating your time to help disabled veterans is a worthy cause.

Find out where the local veterans' hospital is by looking in the local Hospital Service Coordinator Directory. Look at the different options available for volunteers who wish to give their time helping veterans who are hospitalized. Options may include spending time with veterans or shopping and doing other chores for them. Some veterans are not close to family and friends, so volunteers can provide valuable comfort and practical assistance.

Approach the Local Veterans Assistance Program. Many veterans are disabled and they may be living on a relatively small amount of money. They may be unable to drive, not able to afford taxis and need transportation to and from the hospital. Volunteer drivers are often needed.

Help veterans or surviving family members of veterans by getting involved with outreach projects. Find out more about these opportunities by accessing the Local Veterans Assistance Program. If you're interested in organizing or getting involved with authorized fund-raising activities, you can also get details about those projects from the LVAP.
