How to Donate to the Department of Veterans Affairs

By Phoebe Strauss

Although what is now the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs wasn't established until 1930, wounded war veterans have received assistance since colonial times. Settlers in the Plymouth Colony passed a law mandating that the colony support disabled soldiers. The current VA system offers not only financial compensation but also operates a health care system and rehabilitation programs. The VA doesn't solicit contributions, but it accepts both financial gifts and in-kind donations in the form of volunteer assistance and goods.

Go to the VA's website's "Volunteer or Donate" page. You'll see an online form for you to fill out and submit electronically to give the VA details about your availability to donate your time as a volunteer. Someone from the agency will send you a response.

Go to the VA's "Volunteer or Donate" page to begin a cash or goods-donation process.

Select one of two options. On the online form, choose the button that says "Donate" and fill out the form with your contact information. In the last box, explain you'd like to make a financial donation to the VA. Send the form and wait for someone to contact you.

Go to the "Volunteer or Donate" form for the other option and click the hyperlink that reads "Click to See Facility Needs."

Find the state where the VA branch you want to donate to is located. Use the pull-down menu to make your selection. Click "Select." The system will return the list of VA facilities in that location. Not all states have VA medical centers.

Click the hyperlink next to the name of the VA agency you'd like to support. This downloads a PDF file that lists the types of donations that each facility needs.

Get your in-kind or cash donation ready and mail it to the facility you chose.

If there's a local VA facility you'd like to donate to or volunteer for, contact its administration directly.
