How to Find Out About U.S. Veterans Administration Benefits

By Kayla Lowe

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (formerly the Veterans Administration) offers benefits to qualifying veterans. If you served in the military, you might be eligible to receive benefits from the VA, including health care, disability benefits and home loan guarantees. Before you try to get VA benefits, there are a few ways to find out information about what's available to you.

Visit va.gov, the official website for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Hover your mouse over "Veterans Services" and click on one of the links listed below "Benefits & Services" for information about VA benefits.

Visit your local Veterans Benefits Administration office (see Resource). Ask to speak with someone about VA benefits. Sometimes you can be seen on the same day, but if the office is booked all day with appointments, you may be given an appointment to speak with someone at a later date.

Call the VA benefits toll-free number at 800-827-1000. A customer service representative will answer your questions about VA benefits.

Go to va.gov, mouse over "Contact Us" and click on "Ask a Question" if you want to ask a question about VA benefits by email.

You are not eligible for VA benefits if you were dishonorably discharged from the military.
