How to Register With Iowa Veterans Affairs

By Palmer Owyoung

If you are a military veteran living in Iowa, the Iowa Veterans Affairs website will allow you to register for your VA benefits. You may qualify for medical benefits, home owners assistance, hunting and fishing licenses, educational benefits and more. Registration is a fairly straightforward process, and most applications can be filled out in 30 minutes to an hour. Registration will help to insure that you get the benefits that you deserve for serving your country.

Go online to Iowa's section of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.

Start your registration by ticking on the "Register Now" button. You can only register once.

Provide all the information needed for the registration. Choose your user type whether you are a veteran, a VA affiliate or a VA employee. Fill in the form with your complete name, date of birth, gender and contact addresses. Create a username and a password. You will be required to select five security questions as well.

Log on to your account using your newly created username and password.

Locate the "About VA" on the upper tab and look for the "Partner" dropdown. Select "State Veterans Affairs Offices."

Click on "Iowa," and you will be directed to the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs homepage.

Apply for the benefits managed by the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs. You can ask for help from an IDVA benefit specialist and apply for these benefits: injured veterans grant, homeownership assistance, property tax exemption, lifetime hunting and fishing, war orphan tuition assistance, license plates, Vietnam conflict bonus, veterans trust fund, education, high school diploma and Iowa veterans cemetery.

Click on a benefit you want to register for ,and you will be directed to a page inviting you to click on an "Apply" link. Download and print the application form, and fill it out.

Submit the form to the indicated address. Wait for your application to be processed and your benefit to be granted.
