How to Calculate VA Rating

By Kayla Lowe

If you served in any branch of the military and were injured during service, have a limited income or have a condition that may have been worsened by military service, you might be entitled to VA compensation or pension. Once you apply and receive your award letter, you can calculate your VA rating monthly benefits by referring to your disability rating.

Navigate to the VA Compensation and Pension Rate Tables (see References).

Click on the year most prior to your compensation or pension.

Refer to your VA award letter to determine at what rate your disability was rated. For instance, let's say that you are a veteran living alone and your disability compensation was 60%. Then you would receive $974 per month.

Spouses, children and any other dependents increase your award due to the increased family cost.

If you get a pension, make sure to notify the VA of any change in income, such as your spouse's income, because your pension is based on your low income.
