How to Change an Address With Veterans Affairs

By Serena DeLorenzo

If you are inexperienced in dealing with the Department of Veterans Affairs, making even the smallest of changes or updates in their system can be a daunting task. There are thousands of veterans throughout the United States -- and beyond -- who use their services: that can make it difficult to get in touch with a live person. It is imperative, that you are diligent in ensuring your basic information is correct in the VA system, or errors can occur with benefit processing.

Open a web browser and navigate to the Department of Veterans Affairs website at VA.gov.

Look to the top of the page and click on the tab that says "Contact Us". A secondary page will open up with three options. Click on the link that says "Toll Free Numbers". A page will pop up that says "External Redirect". After 30 seconds, you will be redirected to another page with the toll-free numbers listed.

Find the toll free number appropriate for your specific needs. Most veterans will need to call 1-800-827-1000 to speak with a representative about basic benefit issues. If you are a civilian employee, you will call 1-800-733-8387 to speak with a representative about your health care benefits.

Scroll to the bottom of the telephone list and click on the link provided, highlighted in blue, that says "Find a VA Facility". A secondary page will pop up with a map on it.

Click on your state or enter your zip code into the field marked "Zip code". Click on the "Go" button. Scroll down the page to locate your VA medical center and call the number listed. For example, if you are from Portland, Oregon, you will call 503-220-8262 to change your address in their system. The prompts you will follow will depend upon the facility you are calling.

It is necessary to update your address information with your VA regional office, as well as with your VA medical center. It takes a while for information to update between the two systems.
