How to Obtain Disabled Veteran Business Grants

By Eve Lopez

Disabled U.S. veterans have a plethora of government agencies and private organizations dedicated to enabling them to start or expand a small business. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and The Veterans Corporation are both good potential resources for the disabled small business owner who is a U.S. veteran.

Go to Business.gov to find all federally funded programs available to disabled veterans. Your decision of where to apply will be based on whether you want to start or expand your business.

Complete all paperwork involved in applying for a grant. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has a special branch called "The Center for Veterans Enterprise" (see References section). This organization outlines the following crucial steps to take in order to gain a grant to start a business. A written outline of the business idea comes first, followed by a business structure, a business plan, a review of the business plan, implementation of the business plan, and finally, registration of the veteran-owned business.

Contact the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Small Business Administration to see which specific grants you qualify for. In 2010, programs for disabled veterans included the Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative and the Military Reservist Economic Injury Disaster Loan.
