How to Purchase an RV Through the Veterans Administration

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs provides many support services to veterans and active duty personnel. Among these services include home backed-loans, which veterans can use to finance an RV, or commercial vehicle. There is a process that veterans have to go through to qualify for a VA-backed loan.

Contact Veterans Affairs and obtain a Certificate of Eligibility to prove to the mortgage lender that you are eligible for the loan. Conditions of eligibility include at least six years of honorable service, and the applicant must be either a veteran, on active duty, or a reservist, or a member of the National Guard who has served on active duty. An unmarried surviving spouse of a veteran who died on active duty or as a result of a disability related to service, may be eligible for the home loan benefit.

Provide an original Statement of Services, signed by the adjutant, personnel officer, or commander of your unit -- if you are currently on active duty.

The statement must identify you and your social security number, as well as the date of entry on your active duty period -- and indicate any time that was not spent on active duty.

If you were discharged from the Selected Reserves, or the National Guard, you must submit an NGB Form 22, Report of Separation and Record of Service form, or NGB Form 23, Retirement Points Accounting. You must show that you provided at least six years of honorable service, in order to be eligible.

Submit your Certificate of Eligibility to the Winston-Salem Eligibility Center. Alternatively, your lender can get a Certificate of Eligibility for you through the Web LGY system. This is an Internet-based application that can establish your eligibility, and issue you an online certificate instantly. This only works if the lender has access to the system, and if your case has been processed through the Web LGY, which is not always the case. However, it is worth discussing.

Apply online through the Veterans Information Portal -- through the lender -- or apply by mail, to the address on the VA Form 26-1880.

If you are a surviving spouse, you will need to send a copy of the Veteran's DD Form 214, a copy of the veteran's death certificate, and a copy of your marriage certificate. If your spouse died on active duty, you will need to submit the DD Form 1300, and the form must be submitted by mail.
