How to Find Out the Status of a VA Claim

The United States Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) provides an array of benefits to military veterans, active members of the armed forces and their immediate families. Individuals who are eligible can apply for benefits such as disability compensation, a home loan, vocational training or life insurance. The wait time for processing the VA claims varies depending on the type of benefit you or your family member has applied for. You may check the status anytime, however, by logging onto the VA website or calling a VA representative.

Call the toll-free hotline at 1-800-827-1000 to check the status of your VA claim.

Follow the automated instructions and wait to be connected to a VA representative who can help you get the information you need in regards to your claim.

Enter the veteran's VA File Number when prompted by the automated telephone system. If you aren't sure what the VA File Number is, check for it on a piece of correspondence from the Veteran's Affairs Office. If you are still unsure of the veteran's VA File Number, you can speak to a representative for help in identifying the information. The automated telephone system will prompt you to enter "0" at this point to be transferred to a VA representative.

Log on to the VA website at www.va.gov if you prefer to file an electronic inquiry.

Click on the "Contact Us" link on the VA homepage and select "Ask a Question."

Scroll down the page and click on the "Ask Us a Question" link, which will bring you to the electronic inquiry form. On the inquiry form, choose "Status of Claim" as the type of inquiry and select a topic for your inquiry on the scroll-down menu under Question 2.

Hit the "Next" button to be brought to the inquiry form that best matches the claim you are inquiring about. On this page you'll need to provide as much information as possible about yourself and the military veteran. Once all of the fields have been completed accurately, submit the form for review. A VA representative will review your inquiry and contact you regarding the status of your claim via email, phone or U.S. Mail.
