How to Find Out If You Are Eligible for Veterans Benefits

By LeonoreOkwara

Being a veteran may entitle you to veteran benefits. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), your eligibility is dependent upon several factors such as whether you were an active duty member in a military branch by which you were honorably discharged, a reservist called to active duty and completed the required active duty period, a former prisoner of war, a Purple Heart Medal recipient or a veteran who receives Medicaid benefits. As of Sep. 30, 2009, the VA reported that out of aboout 23,440,000 living veterans who were eligible, only 8,493,700 were receiving veteran benefits.

Determine your eligibility for VA benefits using the Internet. Visit the United States Department of Veteran Affairs website, hovering your mouse over "Veteran Services" and selecting "Health Care Information".

Scroll down and locate the box "We provide health care to America's Veterans" and select the link "VA Health Benefits".

Locate the "Do you qualify?" section and select "See if you qualify"

Answer the questions. Your responses to the questions will determine your eligibility for VA benefits.
